About the Tour

Welcome to the Danube by Bike Tour 2009.

The Tour was an initiative of European Commission, Directorate-General for Enlargement who was also the main sponsor, in cooperation with the European Cyclists Federation. The practical organisation was entrusted to Media Consulta.

Cyclists from all over Europe (EU member states, Western Balkan countries and Turkey), regardless of experience, had been invited to join the first European Bike Tour along the Danube which took place from 23 June to 27 June 2009. Participation in the Tour and accommodation during the Tour was free. The Tour followed the European Danube Cycling track that lead participants through five countries including Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania.

Bike Route 1

Budapest
 

The participants in Route 1 started in Budapest, Hungary following the famous Danube-Drava National Park. After crossing the border to Croatia, riders went to Osijek and the Kopacki rit nature park before being given the opportunity to join an entertaining event in Vukovar. The Tour passed Novi Sad and then made its final journey to Belgrade, Serbia.

Bike Route 2

Iron Gate
 

Route 2 travelled from Bucharest via Bechet to Orjahovo, crossing the Romanian-Bulgarian border. In Bulgaria, they cycled to the beautiful city Vidin, where they celebrated with the local population in a special event. The group passed the impressive Iron Gate which connected Romania and Serbia, before finally heading to Belgrade.

Final event

Kalemegdan Fortress in Belgrade
 

At 4.30 pm on Saturday 27 June, the 400 participants of the Tour made their way to the Kalemegdan park, where they were joined by local cycle enthusiasts, before cycling together through Belgrade city.

The international group cycled through the famous Kalemegdan fortress and finally arrived at the shores of confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, at USCE (bikers roundabout), where the festivities of the final celebrations took place.

Bulgaria

The Republic of Bulgaria neighbours five other countries: Romania to the North (mostly along the River Danube), Serbia and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia to the West, as well as  Greece and Turkey to the South.

Croatia

Croatia became an independent state in 1991 as part of the break-up of former Yugoslavia. The Zagorje region, north of the capital Zagreb, is a land of rolling hills, while the fertile agricultural region of the Pannonia Plain is bordered by the Drava, Danube and Sava rivers in the East.

Hungary

Hungary is a landlocked state with many neighbours – Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia and Austria. It is mostly flat, with low mountains in the North.

Romania

Romania, in southeast Europe, is mountainous in the North while the main feature in the South is the vast Danube valley. The river forms a delta as it approaches the Black Sea, which serves as a wildlife reserve for countless native and migratory birds.

Serbia

The Republic of Serbia is a landlocked country in South-eastern Europe, covering the southern part of the Pannonia Plain and the central part of the Balkan Peninsula.
